Research Assistant Ref: R12/01 Statistics and Modelling Science/Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering Salary range: 16,775 - 25,213 GBP The successful candidate for this appointment, which is for a period of up to 36 months, will be employed jointly by the University of Strathclyde and the University of Glasgow (both located in Glasgow) and will be expected to attend meetings with scientists working on telecommunications. This post represents an excellent opportunity for anyone wishing to pursue a research career in mathematics and statistics as applied to telecommunications. The project "Spatial Stochastic Modelling and Optimisation of Future Broadband Telecommunications Networks" is funded by EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) and will use methods of probability theory, stochastic geometry, spatial processes and modern simulation techniques for studying, modelling and optimising of complex telecommunications systems. Quantitative characteristics of network performance, like cost, reliability and efficiency, depend to a large extent on the locations of the network components. In the framework of stochastic analysis, the spatial factors involved in network structure are modelled mathematically and statistically as point processes, tessellations, random sets and random measures. Thus the problem of maximising the efficiency and reducing the costs of the network can be represented as an optimisation problem involving functionals which depend on random sets and measures. This is mainly a mathematical and statistical project that may also include a substantial simulation part to handle situations where theoretical analysis is not feasible. The successful applicant will have a postgraduate degree in mathematics, probability, operations research or mathematical statistics and experience in applications of mathematics in engineering, ideally in telecommunications. Applications (Ref: R12/01) with 3 copies of a full CV giving a full list of scientific publications and the names and addresses (including email addresses where appropriate) of two academic referees should be sent to Dr. Sergei Zuyev, Department of Statistics and Modelling Science, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow G1 1XH, E-mail: sergei@stams.strath.ac.uk, Tel: 0141 548 3663, Fax: 0141 552 2079. Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Zuyev or Professor Ilya Molchanov (University of Glasgow), e-mail: ilya@stats.gla.ac.uk or telephone: +44(0)141 330 5141. Applications by e-mail or fax are accepted. Applications closing date: 1 May 2001. |
